Joe Muraski The Licking County Settlers returned to their winning ways this evening and providing two organizational firsts in the process. The Settlers (12-6) took both ends of a doubleheader over the Southern Ohio Copperheads (7-9) winning game one 2-1 and game two 4-1.The two wins carried the Settlers to six games over .500 the first time in the four year history of the Settlers, and marking that first was the highest attended game in franchise history as 371 fans were at Don Edwards Park in Newark, Ohio to witness the sweep. In game one Phil Klein (Youngstown State University) (2-0) picked up the win. Klein went five and two thirds innings in a very outstanding start. Klein allowed just two hits and one run, while striking out four Copperhead batters. Jarad Miller (Valparaiso University) collected his second save of the season as he pitched the final inning and a third, tossing no-hit baseball in the process. Kyle McMillen (Kent State University) drove in the Settlers lone runs with a double in the second inning. In game two the Settlers strong pitching continued, allowing one run-producing inning to be all they would need in the nightcap. Making the start for the home team in game two was Joe Muraski (Northwestern University). Muraski saw his record improve to 2-1 in collecting the win. The Wildcat turned Settler would toss six innings of shutout three hit baseball while striking out three. Pitching two innings of shutout baseball in relief was Mike Meintel (Wright State University) before turning it over to Nick Karow (Furman University). Karow would allow a run in the 9th as he finished off an outstanding day for Settlers pitching. All of the offense the Settlers would need came in the 6th inning. With two outs and the bases loaded Jon Koenigsfeld (Valdosta State) collected a RBI as he reached first base on a hit by pitch on that play Brandon Gessner (Otterbein College) would come home from third. Later in the inning the speed of John McCambridge (Xavier University) forced a throwing error across the diamond on a ground ball and as a result, Brian Kordal (Akron) and Steve Davis (Costal Carolina) would cross the plate for runs two and three. Koenigsfeld closed out the Settlers scoring as he would place another run on the board coming home on a wild pitch. The Settlers will continue their homestad as they take on the Stark County Terriers Wendesday July 8th at Don Edwards Park, first pitch is 7:00 PM. Brent Choban (Ohio University) will be the starting pitcher for the Settlers as the Settlers look to extend their winning streak to a season high three games.
